About us

Ocelus Ltd is an early stage speciality pharmaceutical company, developing and commercialising the microimplant drug delivery system conceived by Dr Andrew Kirby. Founded in late 2007, Ocelus Ltd is based in South Wales, UK, Ocelus Ltd has been awarded two Welsh Assembly Government innovation grants, and has attracted venture capital funding from Finance Wales.

The name "Ocelus"
Ocelus (pronounced o-kel-us) is the name of a Romano-Celtic healing god, worshipped at Caerwent in South Wales, and also in Carlisle in North West England. Caerwent (Venta Silurum) was a market town of the Silures celtic tribe. One inscription, now in the museum in Newport, is dated AD152. Another inscription on an altar still at Caerwent reads "To the God Mars Ocelus,  Aelius Augustinus, Optio [sub-centurion] willingly and deservedly fulfilled his vow".

Dr Andrew J Kirby PhD MRPharmS
Dr Kirby is the founder of Ocelus, and the inventor of the Ocelus technology. He is a pharmacist, whose Ph.D. was in dermatological pharmacology. Subsequent post-doctoral work was carried out in the fields of enzyme inhibition, particularly with regard to skin, and in polymer science. He has been the named inventor on 6 patent applications, and is a co-founder of two previous start-up companies.
